What the Course Covers

In your time with the Minor Mods Coaching Program, you will have the opportunity to build, consolidate and confirm your clinical competencies across minor modification prescriptions within the domestic home.

These skills form the foundation for more comprehensive and complex home modifications in Australia as well as provide a foundation to provide sound consultative advice even in settings where general advice rather than prescriptions are required.

In addition, you will also have confidence to identify when assistive technology is a better fit.

Minor Modifications have the potential, when appropriately applied to prevent significant injury, increase confidence to stay at home and reduce carer stress...along with many other benefits.

However, as the OT landscape in Australia continues to change, the responsibility on the prescribing therapist for sound practices is ever increasing, with OT's increasingly being pursued for rectification works for failed scripts.

Though the minor modifications coaching program with Janelle and her team, you will explore the indicators, contra-indicators, condition-specific considerations, legal considerations and sustainability / maintenance, permanent and temporary options of

-  Bathroom and wet areas:
ie: shower access, slip reduction, task specific modifications, Bidets, Tapware
-  Home Access:
ie: Steps, threshold and step ramps, Platform Steps doorway widening, auto openers
-  Daily Living:
ie: Chair, couch and recliner modifications, slip reduction options,
-  Bedroom:
ie: Bed access, wardrobe access, lighting and blinds
-  Kitchen Access
ie: Fridge access, pantry access, microwave use, task specific changes, lighting
-  Outdoor and Garage
ie: Slip reduction solutions, Garden access, Automation, washing lines, Task Specific
-  Neuro-diverse supports
ie: high impact solutions, noise reduction / acoustics management / Access
-  Condition Specific Solutions:
Ie: Thermoregulation, lighting, sound proofing, shadow reduction,

-  and much more...

you will also explore anthropometrics, biomechanics and legal implications of prescriptions as you explore each area of minor mods...

Along with compressive exploration of handrails and grabrails in The Rails Project.

This 6-month coaching program is designed around your personal needs, clinical setting and clinical challenges so that you can directly apply what you are exploring into clinical practice and bring real, on the ground concerns to office hours.

If you are not yet in a role that has hands-on expectations regarding minor mods, you will be able to give yourself a clinical boost by exploring these topics and products and use the included case studies to develop your competencies and skills in this area.

The Minor Mods Coaching Program is right for you if:

Community Therapist / Private Practice Owner
Meet The Presenter:
Janelle Arnold is an Occupational Therapist who has worked across the Acute, sub acute and community health spaces over the last 16 years.

Janelle is now the Clinical Director of Kadia Therapy - a boutique Occupational Therapy service in Victoria and is a lead educator and director of The Kadia Lab - a space for Occupational Therapists and Students across Australia to access quality education.

Purpose Of The Program

Occupational Therapists and Student OT's in Australia seek opportunities to build, consolidate and confirm their clinical competence in Minor Modifications with many recognising the value of sound prescriptions as a foundational skill for more advanced home modifications.

With increasing pressures and changes in the health and disability spaces in Australia, more than ever ensuring clinical competency across all areas of clinical practice is vital.

Whilst minor mods are seen to be a basic intervention, the impact of a failed script both to client and required rectification works can be significant. In recent months there has been an increased push to have OT's and their Employers pay for rectification works, or at least, spend time and energy solving problems that could have been avoidable... if only the right training had been accessable.

The tricky thing is, many OT's have never had formal training in minor mods, or had the time to fully explore the topics in depth.

The Minor Mods Coaching program is designed to meet exactly this need.

Through exploring a comprehensive list of minor modifications through the lenses of the participant, unpacking specific topics through tutorials and building a resource of swipe files, the core principles that underpin minor mods will be explored across all areas of the domestic environment so that participants can step into their clinical world with confidence and competence....and know when they are extending beyond their own personal scope and what to do when this happens. After all a safe therapy delivery is our ultimate aim.

Along with access to 6 months of coaching with Janelle and her team, you will also have access to The Rails Project - after all we can not explore minor modifications without unpacking handrails.

The Rails Project unpacks the key elements of rail prescription in detail, exploring all key evidenced areas required for sound practice. The learnings within this program also provide the foundation for all further home modifications learnings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Improve hand rail and grab rail prescription by understanding the relationship between person, product and environment
  • Confidently apply anthropometrics and condition to product selection
  • Interpret key environmental elements which impact prescription options and adjust prescription accordingly
  • Understand the role and duty of care of the Occupational Therapist in rail prescription
  • Explore and apply the Australian Standards, demonstrating an understanding of when and how variations can occur.

The Need For The Program

When Janelle was in the early stages of her career, she learnt handrail prescription the "standard" way, with templates piled onto her desk, and a brief handover of how to prescribe according to the template.

However, when she moved into a community space, she started to see issues: Rails coming away from walls, clients with injuries and rails that were ineffective at helping movement patterns. These rails had been in place for 6 months to 3 years, and all prescribed by therapists across the health care continuum.

The scary things was... this issue was not just limited to handrails and grab rails... there seemed to be no limit to the areas of minor modifications impacted by failed scripts!

Despite OT's reporting they felt confident in their work because the clients "reported to be happy" on follow up phone calls, the building industry shared little faith in the capacity of OT's to prescribe safely.

In addition, with the changing expectations of funding bodies, more and more OT's are finding themselves having to resolve failed scripts, with either themselves or their employer needing to cover the cost, or at the very least, provide services to resolve the issues.

Following pursuit of this area of research in post grad studies at the University of South Australia, Janelle has now presented her research at Sydney OT Australia Conference, Melbourne Assistive Technology Conference (OTA), Monash Health, and other groups across Australia.

This research has led to the development of this training, as well as additional student lead projects with Australian Catholic University, Monash Health and The Kadia Lab.

Janelle is passionate about supporting therapists to have the information and the tools she wished she had had earlier in her career, so that she could serve her clients to the best of her ability, and support the growth and reputation of Occupational Therapy in Australia.
